HOEKOM “TOMMIES”?

As u in 2020-2030 werk soek, sal u waarskynlik werk in die ambagsektor kry.

Bruce Whitfield, The Money Show, het ‘n onderhoud met Ken Duncan, uitvoerende hoof van The Swiss South African Co-operation Initiative (SSACI), gevoer vir sy weeklikse “The Science Of” -funksie.

Kwaliteit is ‘n kritieke saak. As u ervare ambagsmanne verloor, verloor u opleidingsvermoë.

WHY “TOMMIES”?

The national list of high-demand businesses, launched by the Department of Higher Education last week, said unions were in demand this year more than two years ago.

This comes as the government continues to shift its focus to the TVET sector in the fight against unemployment.

If you are looking for work in 2020-2030, you are likely to find work in the craft sector. This is according to the latest national list of high demand businesses (OIHD) in South Africa.

South Africa’s severe shortage of artisans is well documented.

Bruce Whitfield, The Money Show, interviewed Ken Duncan, CEO of The Swiss South African Co-operation Initiative (SSACI), for his weekly “The Science Of” function.

Duncan discussed the science of the artisan.

Quality is a critical issue. If you lose experienced artisans, you lose training ability.

Apprenticeships are back with a bang!

Radio 702

According to Sean Jones, CEO of the Artisan Training Institute (ATI), there needs to be a shift in thinking about artisans, both through educational institutions and the wider population.

A career as a craftsman, because there is faster access to full-time work – with apprentices often getting a subject at a company in their first year. This means that they can also start making money much sooner.

“However, artisans are almost guaranteed for formal employment and can earn R20 000 to R25 000 per month after completing their studies. This is more than most university graduates will earn.”

Demand for skilled artisans such as carpenters, toolmakers, mechanics, furniture or mechanics has grown in South Africa despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, says Arjun Khoosal, co-founder of Kandua, an online home services market.

However, there is a scarcity of individuals who are trained and qualified to meet the demand, he said.

Trade opportunities are also commonly found on deficit-occupancy lists (CTLs) in other countries, including popular emigration destinations such as Australia and the United Kingdom.

If an appeal is made to the CTL, persons in these roles will be able to more easily qualify for a visa for skilled workers. Although it is not a job security, a trading post can therefore be used as a foot in the door for South Africans who want to move overseas.
